More on the Somerville election

A helpful link roundup of the Assembly Square development story from Joe Hughes.
Quotes from the blogosphere

Laugh Atlantis on Joe Curtatone: “He took my name and address and believe it or not, within three hours, I had a recycle bin. I like that. He followed through.”
Fanatic Heart on Tony Lafuente: “Lafuente is charismatic, iconoclastic (like pretty much every American politician claims to be), and whip-smart.”

Position info

  Assembly Square
Curtatone: “He’ll begin by exercising the strong leadership needed to finally get the Assembly Square development off the drawing boards and into construction.”
Lafuente (via j’s scratchpad): “He says he’s not the Mystic View Taskforce candidate, but he praises their plan heavily and supports it. He mentioned that he is working with some of the people affiliated with the Taskforce on the plans. He said he would work to bring the parties back to the negotiation table.”
  Education
Lafuente: “The quality of our schools will determine whether young families will become part of our community fabric or sell out when their children reach school age. They should be our greatest municipal resource.”
Curtatone: “Joe will merge the personnel, payroll and IT departments of the City and the School Department, as will the Recreation and Youth Department.”

  1. I’m going to blog on this a bit later but I thought I might note that ultimately, getting a recycle bin didn’t get my vote. I felt like Curtatone had a lot to say about schools, and had a good idea in this 311 system, but not a whole lot to say about anything else – and the 311 line seems like an idea suitable for a bigger city than Somerville. Getting me a recycle bin made me say, “Wow, thanks Joe!” – and if I was the kind of person who didn’t do any research on the candidates, that would have impressed me enough to vote for him. In the end though, it didn’t cut it.
