It’s funny how the human mind works. We don’t mind paying for something new but we absolutely detest paying for something that used to cost zero. I think that’s the real reason why so many people reacted negatively to SixApart’s new license options for Movable Type, announced last month.
Here’s an idea for SixApart. Instead of imposing licensing terms on a per weblog basis, implement a really kickass comment spam filtering system and charge for that. And no, I don’t think TypeKey is the solution. It’s too cumbersome and they’ve already committed to offering it for free.
There’s a lot to be learned from mt-blacklist. It’s very good but can still be improved upon. Nobody is going to complain about paying — most of us are lined up waiting to hand in our money for a good solution.
