Okay, for a long time WinAmp was among the best, if not the best, media player for Windows. I’ve used it on and off over the years but lately I’m back on Windows Media Player because it does a better job for me in one key respect. I listen to a lot of mp3s over the network. If I hit “pause” in WinAmp, the download stops and the network connection breaks. When I come back and hit “play”, WinAmp spins through a few seconds of cache and then skips to the next song. Windows Media player, by contrast, does a read-ahead and grabs the entire file. Pausing just works.
